                                                                Málaga

Málaga is a city and municipality in Spain, the capital of the province of the same name, located in Andalusia, in the south of the country.

With a population of 574,654 inhabitants as of January 1, 2019, Málaga is the sixth most populated city in Spain, the second in Andalusia, and the forty-sixth in the European Union. It is also the largest coastal city in southern Spain, as well as the largest city that is not a regional capital. Furthermore, it is the most densely populated urban area of the conurbation formed by the towns along 160 km of the Costa del Sol, and the center of a metropolitan area that extends beyond its municipal limits to include 12 other municipalities, which together have a registered population of 987,813 inhabitants. Málaga is considered the fifth-largest metropolitan area in Spain.

Situated at the westernmost end of the Mediterranean Sea and the southern part of the Iberian Peninsula, Málaga lies about 100 km east of the Strait of Gibraltar. Its municipal territory covers an area of 398.25 km², extending over the Montes de Málaga and the Guadalhorce Valley. The city is located in the center of a bay surrounded by mountain ranges. Two rivers, the Guadalmedina and the Guadalhorce, cross through the city, flowing into the Mediterranean Sea.

Founded by the Phoenicians in the 8th century BC, making it one of the oldest cities in Europe, Málaga became first a federated and later a Latin-right municipality under the Roman Empire. It was also a prosperous Andalusian medina, serving as the capital of its own kingdom four times before being incorporated into the Crown of Castile in 1487. In the 19th century, Málaga experienced significant industrial and revolutionary activity, becoming the first industrial city in Spain and earning the titles of "Always Courageous" and "First in the Danger of Freedom." The city was the scene of one of the bloodiest episodes of the Spanish Civil War and played a key role during the tourism boom of the 1960s and 1970s. Today, Málaga is a prominent cultural, economic, and entertainment center, and an important transportation hub along the Mediterranean coast.

HOW TO GET

Málaga's extensive infrastructure network makes the city easily accessible by air, train, road, or sea. Its international airport connects to major European capitals. By road, the city is linked to all points along the Costa del Sol via the A-7 highway. Additionally, its train and bus stations, located in central areas, are well connected to other modes of transportation, ensuring seamless travel throughout the region.

BY CAR

Málaga is connected to the rest of the Iberian Peninsula by road through the A-45 and A-92 highways. The A-45 links with the A-4 (Autovía del Sur), which provides a direct route to Madrid. The A-92, which crosses all of Andalusia, connects with other major highways across the country. The A-45 allows entry into Málaga through Ciudad Jardín, providing access to the city center or the eastern and western bypasses when heading to other areas of the city. Road connections to other coastal towns are made via the A-7 (Autovía del Mediterráneo), which runs along the entire coast of the province of Málaga.

BY PLANE

Located 8 kilometers from the city, the Málaga-Costa del Sol International Airport offers regular flights to major cities in Spain and Europe. From the airport, you can quickly reach Málaga's city center by train, bus, or taxi.

A taxi ride costs approximately €20 (the fare may vary depending on the time of day, day of the week, holidays, and service surcharges). The C-1 commuter train reaches the city center in 12 minutes, with a ticket price of €1.80. The Airport Express Bus (Line 75) takes about 15 minutes, and the fare is €3.

The AVE also connects Málaga to Córdoba, Puente Genil, Antequera, Zaragoza, Tarragona, and Barcelona. Additionally, Málaga is linked to other major Spanish cities through long-distance and medium-distance railway lines.

The city boasts the modern and centrally located Málaga-María Zambrano train station, situated next to the intercity and international bus station. The station also provides access to commuter train lines that connect to the airport and nearby towns such as Torremolinos, Benalmádena, and Fuengirola. Several urban bus lines serve the station from various parts of the city.

The Renfe Spain Pass is a card designed for non-residents, allowing travel by train throughout Spain. This pass is highly convenient as it can be used on all AVE, long-distance, and medium-distance trains. The Renfe Spain Pass is valid for one month from the first trip and comes in two classes (Business/Club or Tourist). It can be purchased up to six months in advance, with options for 4, 6, 8, or 10 journeys.
